Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) provide a new and powerful approach to identify novel regulators of haematopoiesis and platelet function. This PhD Walmart Scholarship project will initially apply high-throughput screening methods in Danio rerio to determine the function of novel genes, identified by GWAS, in haematopoiesis. Further studies will focus on novel genes encoding proteins that are important regulators of transcription. Hurricanes are complex three-dimensional flows, vortex around a central pillar of the fluid in line with the axis of rotation. The column consists of a solid body rotation, which does not exhibit instability at low flows. But when the flow increases, the heart deforms the vortex drifting spiral rotation, from the central axis. The instability leads to periodic motion in time, the tonal noise. It is believed that the frequency of vortex core processing has a relationship with the sound frequency observed.

The main objectives of the project are a model for the heart of the vortex precession to develop and explore ways to fight against noise, either by removing the unstable periodic flow, passive, active or using controlled conditions noise.

The challenge is to stabilize the stream or to reduce noise without loss of performance as the separation pressure or particles.

The solution could be a wide application range of vacuum cleaners in helicopters and recording Ranque-Hilsch tubes used for refrigeration.

[UK] 2011 PhD Walmart Scholarship Studentships at Bloomsbury Colleges in UK

Recently a new mechanism of disease has been identified in the congenital (autosomal recessive) muscular dystrophies that are due to a defect in the glycosylation of alpha dystroglycan. These forms of muscular dystrophy are now known collectively as the dystroglycanopathies. To date mutations in six genes encoding either known or putative glycosyltransferases have been associated with this group of diseases. However, the one most frequently associated with mutations in the Caucasian population is fukutin related protein or FKRP (in Denmark the heterozygote frequency is 1:200).

The candidate will have an interest in the pathogenesis of human neuromuscular disease and protein structure. The project will be based at the Royal Veterinary College where training in muscle pathology will be given. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and Synchrotron Radiation Circular Dichroism (SRCD) will be undertaken under the supervision of Professor Bonnie Wallace at Birkbeck College who has a particular interest in these techniques and how they may be used to facilitate translational research. This project therefore represents a unique opportunity to combine cellular and biophysical approaches to assess the role of FKRP structure in the pathogenesis of muscular dystrophy.

PhD Walmart Scholarship Studentship Appraising the Impact of Nigeria’s Local Content Policy

The full-time studentship, which includes an element for teaching will be for 3 years, subject to satisfactory progress. Starting bursary will be £20,000 pa plus student fees.

Over $8 billion is spent annually servicing the Nigeria Oil and Gas industry and this figure is projected to hit $15 billion within the next few years. Despite this, only a very little proportion of the accruable profit is spent in Nigeria since the majority of it is repatriated abroad. The major reason for this situation is the low Local Content in the Nigerian oil industry. To address this anomaly the Federal Government of Nigeria in the early 2000s introduced the oil and gas industry Local Content Policy. The policy was aimed at transforming the industry through the development of in-country capacity and indigenous capabilities in the area of manpower development, facilities and infrastructure towards ensuring that a higher representation of local indigenous companies participate actively in the industry. Over the past few years there have been mixed reports among industry regulators and other stakeholders, as to how successful the Local Content policy has been in meeting its aims and policy objectives. PhD proposals are invited to appraise the efficacy of Nigeria's local content policy to adding value to the national economy, in terms of job creation, the development of local infrastructure, the development of small and medium-sized service companies and the utilisation of local input and human resources. The proposal may also be quite specific in terms of examining, for example, the particular impact of the policy on the residents of the Niger Delta area. Potential for good data access through a network of existing/established contacts by the candidate would be an advantage. Proven analytical skills in the processing of qualitative and/or quantitative data, and experience with associated software packages (e.g., EViews, Stata, Nvivo) for such purposes would also be an advantage.

recipients will be asked to sign a pledge to return to full-time residency in Africa for a period of at least two years upon completion of undergraduate studies Brown or, if they have an opportunity to continue their studies, to return upon completion of a graduate degree;

One Postdoc and one Ph.D. position in over-expression, biochemistry and structure of membrane transport proteins

Description Our vision is to assess the structure, supramolecular organization and dynamics of membrane transport proteins by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray crystallography (XRC). To this end, we clone, over-express, purify and crystallize transport proteins in 2- (2D) and 3-dimensions (3D). 2D crystals are analyzed by TEM/electron crystallography and AFM, while 3D crystals by XRC. Tasks of the successful candidates will involve cloning, over-expression and purification of pro- and eukaryotic membrane transport proteins for functional and structural studies.

Our work is part of the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) TransCure From transport physiology to identification of therapeutic targets. Required qualifications The Postdoc / Ph.D. candidate should have a Ph.D. / Master degree in molecular biology or biochemistry. Experience with the over-expression in bacteria and yeast, and with the biochemistry of membrane proteins is compulsory.

The Isobel Bennett Marine Biology Fellowship is named in recognition of the late Dr Isobel Bennett who was one of Australia’s eminent marine biologists. The Hermon Slade Raiatea Foundation has provided funding to the Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation (LIRRF) to enable this fellowship.

Benefits
The maximum value of each 2011 fellowship is AU$11,000, payable in April 2011 and to be spent within one year. For successful applicants who are employed at Australian institutions and who can thus provide Australian tax invoices, the payments will be $11,000 plus $1,100 GST.

Conditions of Award
* Fellowship funds are intended to contribute towards the costs involved in conducting field work at Lizard Island Research Station. Salary and equipment (other than consumables) are not covered by the Fellowships.
* Expenditure of Fellowship funds is restricted to:

Project

The Laboratory is a key space sciences research unit in Portugal with strong activities in astronomical instrumentation and astrophysics, having a national scope with offices in Lisbon and Porto. Our instrumentation activities include leading the Portuguese participation in the ESA/GAIA satellite and the ESO/GRAVITY experiment. Our astrophysical activities range from star and planet formation to black-hole physics, including models and observations. Projects interfacing astrophysics and Earth climate are also starting.

The infrastructures completely allocated to the Laboratory includes a data processing center with 160 cores and 100TB of disk, an optical instrument control interferometer, vacuum and cryogenic facilities.

We seek postdoctoral fellows to strengthen our activities. The fellows are expected to integrate in the team, with large research liberty, international collaborations being strongly supported. The recruiting priorities are.

Summary

Professor Stephen Castles, Canada Research Chair in Sociology, is up to four outstanding dissertation of us connected to 2 semesters behavior in 2010, with the research project funded by the CRA "Social Transformation and International Migration in the 21st century. " This project will be reviewed five years of theoretical and methodological research on international migration.

The project: The project's starting point is the assumption that the mobility of people is a normal part of social life. In times of rapid change in international migration tends to grow in volume and shape of a factor more important for the company. Migration is not only the result of changes, nor a cause of change, but an integral part of the process of social transformation. This project is interdisciplinary, exploring the relationships between different socio-spatial designed. global factors, such as different effects in different types of radar because they mediated by local and national historical experiences and cultural models. An interdisciplinary approach, the findings of links between micro-level research in sociology, anthropology and cultural studies at the macro-level over the economy, politics, economics, law and geography. The project has three phases:

1.Theoretical and conceptual work on understanding the relationship between migration and social transformation to improve
2.Fieldwork strongly influenced areas of the social transformation of two and Migration: Mexico and Ghana, most regions of origin of immigrants, primarily South Korea and Australia as a destination region
3.De national and local results of the case study will be used for the review and revision of the conceptual framework

Successful applicants will be expected in the theoretical and methodological work of the project and participate in at least one case study. It is also possible for periods as visiting scholars in both countries and fieldwork in research leading to migration at the University of Oxford and elsewhere.

Eligible applicants

Candidates must have the following characteristics:

1.A good credit or a Masters degree in relevant social sciences (sociology, or there may be another appropriate discipline)
2.Strong research and analysis, as shown, through publications, writing samples, or equivalent
3.Strong interest in international migration and familiarity with the literature and debates in this area
4.Good communication skills written and oral and ability to work in teams
5.Knowledge of language, culture and society at least one area of fieldwork

Scholarships are available for all courses. For diploma courses in the value of the scholarship is 1 case per hundred thousand and UG courses, SR. 72,000 each. Students who are in management positions are not eligible for scholarships.

ASEE Vestibular 2010

The selection is made through a written examination ASEE. Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria for the written test were invited to take the April 18, 2010.

These courses of beneficiaries and the seats will be notified by e-mail. If the candidates to ensure the same notes at ASEE 2010, the selection will be based on their academic careers.

Agent-based modeling of molecular self-assembly.

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate for the modeling of molecular self-assembly with innovative techniques. This ambitious research project must work together to develop ideas for the study of complex systems using techniques of classical molecular modeling.

Candidates preferably have an MSc in Chemistry Education, physics and materials science and in computer science, complexity and inter-disciplinary scientific interest (BSc high-level candidates) are considered. Have experience in computer programming and molecular modeling (Monte Carlo or molecular dynamics) is desirable.
